Vintage 1930s two-plank wood newspaper stand sign, hand-painted in dark blue with “The Evening Bulletin” in dark orange blackletter script. Routed channel along the bottom edge used to slide in to the headline of a newsstand. The Philadelphia Evening Bulletin was one of the highest-circulation evening newspapers in the country, publishing from 1847 until 1982. Displays well as found. Lettering intact and legible. The sign reads CARROT giving it a great homemade roadside produce stand quality. The board has a rough, primitive surface with heavy outdoor weathering, worn paint, exposed gray wood, checking, edge wear, and old nail holes. The back is unpainted and heavily oxidized from age and use. Sold as found. This sign directs parishioners to attend a worship service or a religious gathering inside a specific room called the vestry (also known as a sacristy). Historically, a vestry is a room attached to a church where the clergy change into their ceremonial robes (vestments) and keep sacred vessels or parish records. Masonite. Given the combination of the hand-painted execution, the font style, and the natural weathering of the oil paint on a hardboard backing, this piece was most likely fabricated between 1940 and 1965 to serve a mid-century parish. Constructed from pine boards with carved pointing hand ends and red block lettering with yellow shadowing. Originally used at a roadside restaurant/seasonal drive-in in central Pennsyvlvania. Primitive lightweight construction with visible age and weathering throughout. Heavy surface wear from outdoor use, including paint loss, scattered staining, scratches, splits, edge losses, nail holes, and areas of old repairs.
